I have been an attorney with Landrum & Shouse, LLP in the Lexington, Kentucky office since 1999. My practice principally deals with commercial law and I am heavily involved in matters dealing with commercial litigation. As part of my commercial work, I have extensive experience in matters dealing with coal mining, representing a variety of operators and regularly appearing on their behalf before state and federal regulatory bodies.
The diversity of my clients, with their needs for a general counsel, drives much of my practice and reflects the eclectic character of my practice. As result, many of my clients are out of state and on occasion I have to manage matters on an international level.
Occasionally I am called upon to give advice to companies regarding criminal repercussions that may arise from a particular business practice, or responding to warrants, subpoenas or grand jury investigations. I have practiced criminal cases in state and federal courts, along with military courts martial. My criminal practice is now primarily focused toward white collar criminal cases that have commercial elements underpinning the case.
Litigation has been a major component of my practice and I have tried many cases before a jury, appearing as defense counsel on occasion and at other times representing the plaintiffs. My trial record is quite successful and I obtained one of the highest judgments ever rendered against the Commonwealth of Kentucky, with a verdict of over Two Million Dollars ($2,000,000.00) that was upheld on appeal.
Over the years I have had the privilege and honor to act as counsel to elected government officials, on both a state and local level, and I regularly represent judges, other attorneys and law firms in a variety of matters. In 1997 I was appointed as the Fayette County Teen Court Judge and currently hold that position.
For over fifteen years I have held an “AV” Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, which is their highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards. Admitted to practice before the Kentucky Supreme Court, as well as all inferior courts in Kentucky; the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky; the Fourth and the Sixth Circuits for the United States Courts of Appeals; and the United States Supreme Court, I am a member of the Kentucky Bar and the American Bar Associations.
