Our White Collar Crime And Government Investigation Practice

Representing Both Individuals and Business

For more than two decades, Landrum & Shouse has maintained a statewide and regional practice in complex criminal defense for clients appearing in federal and state court. Landrum & Shouse White Collar Criminal Defense practice ranked in Kentucky's Top Tier by U.S. News & World Report - Best Lawyers Best Firms 2017 Edition.

Our white collar crime and government investigations practice is led by R. Kent Westberry, a partner who practices out of both the Louisville and Lexington offices. Kent has served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. Kent also served as President of the Kentucky Bar Association from 2004-2005. Kent has, for many years, been listed in the white collar crime sections for such publications as Best Lawyers in America and Kentucky Super Lawyers. He is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is a Life Member of the United States Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference.

Over a number of years, Kent has defended some of the largest and most highly publicized criminal prosecutions in Kentucky. However, despite the nature of the cases handled by Kent and Landrum & Shouse, it is our belief that the most successful criminal defenses should not be high profile. Defense attorneys are most effective at the investigative stage, before an indictment has been returned and in the headlines.

Examples of Our Cases

Kent and this firm have handled virtually all types of criminal matters. Examples of such defense involve the following:

  • State and federal tax violations
  • Mail and wire fraud
  • Medicaid/Medicare fraud
  • Environmental crimes
  • Coal mining — criminal defense
  • Grand jury appearances, representing witnesses, subjects and targets
  • Money laundering
  • Criminal investigation crimes
  • Various whistleblower assertions
  • Antitrust criminal investigation

In building on a solid record of defense, in 2005 and thereafter, Kent served as Lead Counsel for former Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher in the Merit System Investigation which resulted in a dismissal of all charges brought against this former governor. More recently, Kent has been involved in defending elected and appointed officials in federal voter fraud cases. Kent frequently advises businesses and municipalities in responding to requests for documents and records from Grand Jury subpoenas. Equally as important is the frequency in which Kent and this firm represent individuals at both the trial and investigative stage of state and federal criminal proceedings.
