Blue Grass Airport Receives Architectural Award For New Westside Hangars
Lexington, KY – May 13, 2015 – This week the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) recognized Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport with the General Aviation Architectural Project of the Year Award. This award recognizes the airport for its excellence in designing new private aircraft hangars that reflect the surrounding horse farms and neighboring Keeneland Race Course.
With the completion of Blue Grass Airport’s 4,000 ft. crosswind runway in 2010, the airport had a unique opportunity to develop new private aviation facilities on the westside of the airport. In designing these facilities, much emphasis was placed on creating hangars that would architecturally reflect the Bluegrass region and enhance the historic corridor in which the airport is located. The new hangars that are a part of this westside development were designed to replicate the many barns that dot the hills of the region and the color scheme was selected to blend seamlessly into the aesthetics of iconic Keeneland Race Course, located directly across the street from the airport.
“We are very proud of this project and the partnership we had with Keeneland to ensure that these facilities would represent our region well,” said Eric Frankl, executive director of Blue Grass Airport. “With such high visibility from the Keeneland grandstand, it was our desire for the hangars to blend seamlessly with the surrounding beauty of the Bluegrass. It is an honor to be recognized for this accomplishment and for the hard work the Airport Board and our team put into creating these architecturally-pleasing facilities.”
The new westside private aviation development includes two buildings totaling 18,000 square feet. Each building features 12 individual T-hangars, one box hangar, restrooms and a storage area. Plans for additional hangar facilities are in place for when the need arises. This hangar development expands Blue Grass Airport’s services to include additional T-hangars and box hangars, a self-serve fuel farm, aircraft cleaning station, community office for flight planning, on-site aircraft maintenance and complimentary wireless internet. These facilities are conveniently positioned adjacent to the airport’s private aviation runway and separate from commercial and corporate aviation facilities.
The Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) is the largest chapter of AAAE and includes over 450 members. The Southeast Chapter covers 12 states plus the Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.
